Overview
Who you are and how you relate to others can either facilitate or inhibit your helpfulness as a counselor. Intentional exploration of your cultural heritage brings about increased awareness and understanding of your multidimensional identity (your socioeconomic status, age, political diversity, educational diversity, geographic region, culture, lifestyle, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and level of ability), as well as how your identity shapes your experiences and interpersonal relationships.
In our profession, we understand that purposeful and reflective writing promotes personal and professional development. You are a representative of your cultural heritage in this assignment. You will tell the story of how you see yourself in the world and share your truth and explore the impact your experiences have had on your life.
To help you shape your story, you will complete a worksheet analyzing the dimensions of your cultural heritage and experiences.
