MWP #2 Sentence Outline Instructions
Purpose: A full sentence outline helps you express the specific and complete ideas for each section of the paper. Make sure to include your image with your sentence outline submission.
Assignment: Use the sentence outline worksheet (I have provided) and the essay assignment instructions. Note: The goal of the sentences outline is to focus on the development of your paragraphs by following the elements below.
Remember you are to select a visual representation (e.g., poster, pamphlet, billboard, sculpture) of the culture or ethnic group that you wrote about for Paper #1. Analyze how that representation is achieving or not achieving its creators’ desired effect. The point here is not to evaluate the representation, but to walk your readers through the specifics of how that representation is working, or attempting to work, on a group of viewers.
Please limit your focus to 3 key strategies (lines, color, size, or shape just to name a few) that the creators of the representation use; these strategies should come from our textbook reading. Make sure to include the selected image for your essay.
Introduction: In an essay an introduction is a beginning section which states the purpose and goals of the following writing. The introduction typically describes the scope (overreaching topic) of the document and gives background information. Note: That your introduction should not state your thesis or conclusion in any way.
Thesis: Offers a clear summary of the main points/claims in the essay. The thesis should be expressed in one or two sentences. The thesis statement should not repeat your introduction in any way or contain background information. The thesis needs to contain your overreaching topic and then your key terms. The key terms should be listed in the order of logical, chronological, or order of importance’s.
Topic Sentences: Remember your key terms should follow some kind of order, the same order presented in your thesis (chronological, logical, or importance). The topic sentence should summarize the main idea of a paragraph. The topic sentence is known as a focus sentence, which works to both encapsulate and organize an entire paragraph.
Evidence: There are two different forms of evidence: inartistic’ and artistic proofs. Inartistic’ proofs are proofs which are not supplied by the writer’s efforts, but existed beforehand, such as witnesses. Whereas, Artistic’ proofs are those poofs that are discovered through rhetorical invention. Meaning personal experiences, or beliefs that the writer invents. For this assignment you should be utilizing inartistic proofs. I caution you, do not use google.
Analysis: Should be a detailed examination of your topic and the evidence provided. The elements, and structure that surround the topic and evidence should be broken down in this section. This is where it is important to move beyond the surface. Here ask yourself questions that are not apparent, work on shifting your thinking from general to specific. Why, What, Who, and How questions work for this section. Meaning ask yourself these questions, not your reader, and then examine how the answers to those questions give merit to the evidence, the general populations knowledge, or feeds into the mass concepts that surround the proofs you provided.
Transition Sentences: Should help to build “bridges” that “carry a reader from section to section. This is a time that the order of the key terms is important (chronological, logical, or order of importance). Here you
should highlight why the current term (topic) propagates or supports the next term/ topic. The transition sentence is just that, a sentence not a paragraph. Meaning you should not be explaining the next topic here, just introducing the connection to the next topic in one or two sentences. Closing one door, in order to open another door, if you will. I have included transitional phrasing to help you in this process. Please navigator to transitional phasing for help with transitional phrases wording:

(You will repeat this process for all key terms provided in the essay.)
Transition to Conclusion: Should be comprise of one sentence that lets me as a reader know that the essay is almost to a close. Meaning the sentence should build a bridge to the next phase of your essay.
Conclusion topic sentence: Should highlight the general topic or argument. For example: Overall, the African American culture should not be thought of as one large group.
Note: In order to complete the remainder of your conclusion answer the questions listed on the sentences outline.
Research: You should be using your knowledge for this essay. DO NOT use google to gain information. If you need to further your knowledge you can obtain 2 additional Scholarly journals/ articles from the following approved search engines; Jstor, and library Data base. I have provided you with these links within the menu tab of our course forum. Make sure to keep notes of your research for both in text citations and a work cited page.
