COUC 546 DSM-5-TR SELF-REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Overview
Throughout your career as a counselor, you will be required to assess and diagnose clients. To engage in this practice in a competent manner, you will need to have a good working knowledge of the DSM-5-TR, including the general categories and the specific disorders that are contained in each category. This DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection Assignment will introduce you to some of the diagnostic categories that you will encounter as a counselor.
Instructions
You will have three self-reflection assignments to complete, each due during a different Module: Week. Before beginning each assignment, review the relevant categories of the DSM-5-TR.
DSM-5-TR Self-Reflection: Second Assignment
Choose one disorder from one of the following two categories:
- Substance-related and Addictive Disorders
- Schizophrenia Spectrum
For each Self Reflection Assignment, respond to each of the following prompts for your chosen diagnosis:
- Considering your own worldview and belief system, why do you believe people develop the diagnosis you chose to discuss?
- What potential biases or beliefs arise for you regarding clients who struggle with the diagnosis you chose to discuss?
- What will you do in the future to mitigate these biases?
- Identify at least one code from the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics and discuss how the code is relevant to the discussion of your chosen diagnosis.
