Mia reported that she remembers a carefree and happy childhood. She admires her parents who she described as kind and hard-working. She had a close relationship with a younger brother and remembers playing with him for hours. As a teenager, however, she had been sexually abused by her maternal uncle over a period of three years, between the ages of 12 and 15. Her 30-year-old uncle, a recovering on-again-off-again alcoholic who lived with the family, implored her to keep the abuse a secret.

He would make frequent promises that the abuse would stop stating that he would leave her alone “from now on,” but the pauses never lasted more than a few weeks. If he was worried she would reveal the abuse, he would try to elicit sympathy from her by stating that her parents would kick him out, that he would be destitute and probably go back to drinking and “lose everything.” At other times, he called her a “slut” and would threaten that her parents would not believe her or would blame her, since he had such a positive relationship with the family. Mia wondered if he was right and if her family loved her during these times.

At the age of 15, Mia revealed the abuse to her father. He immediately acted and the uncle moved out of the home. He died shortly afterward from a drug overdose. Mia’s mother arranged for her to receive counseling for a few months, but Mia remembers little about this. There was no further discussion about the abuse with her family.

Mia now is happily married and is the mother of two teenage girls. She states that she has thought little about the abuse since that time. Her husband is aware of it, but they have not discussed it in depth. She reports that they have a strong marriage and that she enjoys positive relationships with her daughters.

Now that her daughters “don’t need me as much,” she felt free to pursue her social work degree and is eager to pursue a career working with at-risk children and youth.

Many of us have stories of our own, of suffering or difficulty that prompted us to pursue social work as a profession. These experiences can present both valuable assets and challenging obstacles. It is essential that we cultivate a habit of self-reflection, so we can process those experiences and manage our own values, attitudes, beliefs, biases, and emotions that may be connected to those experiences so we can serve our clients’ best interests. We must achieve a level of healing before we can capably serve others as a helper.

This process of self-reflection and self-correction is key to developing as a professional. In fact, this is so essential that the Council on Social Work Education has identified professional and ethical behavior as one
